The 5 MUST-HAVE posts for every Instagram account!

Here's the thing: people don't follow you for what you offer, but for who you are. Yeah, it's a little counter-intuitive, but if there is one thing I've learned from my years of being on Instagram, it is that people are on social media not just to consume images and ideas - they're looking for real, genuine human connection.

So you've got an Instagram account, and you get a fair number of likes - but your audience is just not engaging with your posts! This could be because of many different reasons, but it's most likely because they don't really know you, the content creator.

Here's the thing: people don't follow you for what you offer, but for who you are. Yeah, it's a little counter-intuitive, but if there is one thing I've learned from my years of being on Instagram, it is that people are on social media not just to consume images and ideas - they're looking for real, genuine human connection.

Think about it. How many people do you know who still actively throw parties, or go to clubs and societies to make friends? My guess is not that many!

Social media has taken over as one of the most commonly used channels for human contact, and for good reason too. You basically have all of your friends on your smart-phone, and getting in touch with them is only a touch-screen away. So it's pretty obvious that when people follow your account on Instagram, it's not just for the pretty pictures, but the person behind those pictures, who might actually become their friend!

Now, with this perspective in mind, it becomes a lot easier to create posts and updates that help you create that connection with your audience. And today, I'm going to share with you 5 posts that will help you achieve exactly that!

Here are

Let's jump right in!

1. An Introduction

Seems obvious, but you'd be surprised at just how many Instagram accounts, especially newer ones, have no introduction, no way of knowing who the heck is sharing these pictures! Of course, your Instagram bio should be a condensed, descriptive introduction to who you are and what you do, but I can not recommend enough creating a separate post telling your audience exactly who you are!

Okay, I get it, not everyone feels comfortable putting themselves out there. That's okay! At the very least, tell your people your name (or a name you'd liked to be addressed by), what you do, what you like, and maybe a little bit about your beliefs/ what you advocate.

Your introduction doesn't really need to be your very first post, in fact, on my current Instagram account, I didn't even share my own introduction post until after I had about 50 followers, and even then, it wasn't a selfie! However, as a follower myself, I often scroll through accounts I've never come across before, and there is nothing about who the account-manager is, what they do, or even if there's an actual person behind the @handle!

So if you don't have an introduction in place yet, write one out now! The picture you share with it doesn't matter as much, but your audience needs to know who you are!

2. What You Do

This is especially important for brand or business accounts, though personal accounts should have some of these posts too. What do you do for a living? If you're trying to drive traffic to your business through Instagram, I highly recommend having a business-related post every few days.

In fact, I've actually put together a FREE 15-Day Instagram Content Plan that incorporates business posts without making your feed too spammy or impersonal. Click the banner below to grab it now!

If you're using Instagram specifically to drive consumer traffic, make sure that your business posts are distinctive and visually striking. Just because it is a business post, doesn't mean that it needs to be 100% professional or dull or boring - make sure it fits well into your content feed. Sure, the important information will all be in the caption, but like I've said before, no one will read your caption if your image doesn't grab their attention!

3. A Glimpse Into Your Life

A.k.a. - a selfie or a candid photo.

Like I mentioned earlier, it is so important for your audience to understand that there is an actual person (or a group of people) running your page. We automatically trust human beings over big corporations, and this is a distinctive advantage when it comes to personal and small business accounts.

Sharing a picture of your meal, or a picture of what you wore today, or even a picture of your pet instantly adds a huge amount of personality to your account and creates a huge amount of trust between you and your audience - you trust them enough to share a little bit of your life with them, and in return, they will trust you enough to share a little bit of their time with you!

4. A Flatlay

This is a huge crowd-pleaser. People seem to love flatlay images for unknown reasons, and it is a sure-fire way to keeping your followers entertained!

A flatlay image is just a purposefully laid out collection of objects that together tell you a story.

Here's an example of probably the best flatlay I've ever created (and trust me, there have been a lot):

Now I'm gonna be honest here, taking a good flatlay takes a bit of practice and patience. Even after photographing dozens of flatlays, I still find that it takes me a couple of shots to really get into the flatlay flow! So I definitely recommend setting aside a flatlay-day every week or fortnight or so, just so you have a full day of uninterrupted photography. It honestly helps!

In case you're not sure where to begin with flatlays, I created a whole post on how to slay the flatlay game, which you can read below!

5. A Call-To-Action

This is particularly useful if you want to leverage your Instagram traffic to an external link. Here's the thing: your Instagram reach is usually far bigger than your follower count! You'll be able to see this when you switch to a Business account and check out the analytics about a week after the switch. For instance, ever since my Instagram account crossed about 500 followers, my weekly reach has been at a constant average of 13,000 - 15,000 every week! This means that in one week, my posts are reaching about 700 times more the number of users that actually follow me (currently around 2,800)!

Now as a blogger who launches new stuff all the time (far too often, in fact, I have no self-control....) I'm always asking people to click the link in my bio and check out my new posts or landing pages! Of course, as you've probably noticed you can only share one link on your profile at a time. Sure, you can keep changing it, but here's why that may not always be a good idea:

  1. It's just tedious. Constantly having to edit your profile is straight-up boring. And as someone who blogs twice a week, I am not in the mood for changing my profile link twice a week for the rest of my life!
  2. It kind of makes some of your old posts irrelevant. For instance, I have a free e-mail course which I'm always promoting, but if my bio link points to a recent blog post but someone checks out an older post about Winstagram and wants to join the course, they will probably look at the link, assume the course is no longer available, and move on!

Enter Linktree.

Yeah, you've seen those profile links that look something like linktr.ee/username and probably even wondered what the heck that is. Simply put, your Linktree is a landing page where you can add 'tabs' that allow you to share multiple links. You can add or replace links on your Linktree admin page, and it will instantly update your landing page. All you have to do on your profile is to add your Linktree link, and it takes care of all the updates for you!

Honestly, I'm surprised that not everyone is using Linktree already, it is such a brilliant tool, and their free plan basically does everything you need it to! (No, this post is not sponsored and none of these links are affiliate links, I just honestly love this tool!)

Here's what my Linktree looks like. I currently have tabs that link out to my giveaway, some of my blog posts, my Facebook group, my free e-mail course, as well as my website. And all of this simply shows up when you click the single link in my bio!

Magic, eh?

So, to recap, here are 5 MUST-HAVE posts for every Instagram account:

  1. An introduction/ about-me post.
  2. A post telling people what you do.
  3. A selfie/candid post from your life.
  4. A flatlay.
  5. A call-to-action.
And always remember, people follow you for you, the person behind all the content. So don't be afraid to put yourself out there, that's exactly what your peeps are looking for!
